Emily looks toward the lake.
“I was so afraid.”
“I know.”
“But I wanted someone to know why.”
You squeeze her hand.
“I knew.”

You stare at it for a long time.
Emily comes beside you.
“Too much?” she asks.
“No.”
“You sure?”
You nod.
“It reminds the house who won.”
She smiles.
Then she hands you a key.
“What’s this?”
“To the cottage.”
“I already have one.”
“This is the new lock.”
You look at her.
She shrugs.
“I changed it last week. Felt like time.”
You close your fingers around the key.
It is small.
Silver.
Ordinary.
But keys are never just keys after someone has been locked away.
Emily leans her head on your shoulder.
“You can still come anytime,” she says.
You kiss her hair.
“I know.”
“And Mom?”
“Yes?”
“I’m glad you didn’t believe him.”
Your eyes burn.
“I’m glad you made a sound.”
She laughs softly, but her voice breaks.
“I made a lot.”
“I heard the right one.”
Outside, wind moves across the lake.
Inside, the cottage holds.
Years ago, your mother built protection into paper. Years later, you followed a sound through rain. And because of both, Emily stands beside you alive, free, and holding the keys to every door in her own house.
