“Listening.”
“To what?”
She shrugs. “Nothing scary.”

On the first night, after boxes are stacked and takeout containers pile in the sink and exhaustion hangs over the place like a blanket, Emma pads into the kitchen in socks and stands looking around.
“It doesn’t feel like the old one,” she says.
Daniel stills.
Fear flashes first. The instinct to wonder if he built wrong, chose wrong, failed to recreate enough. Then she adds, “It feels like us.”
