Nine Hearts and One Promise
1979: A Choice That Changed Everything
After the death of his wife Anne, Richard Miller’s life seemed to stop. The house, once filled with laughter and dreams of a big family, turned silent and cold. Friends advised him to remarry, but in Richard’s heart lived the memory of his wife’s last words:
Family games
“Don’t let love die with me. Find a place where it can live on.”
One rainy night, he found himself at St. Mary’s orphanage. In a long corridor echoing with children’s cries, Richard saw nine little sisters. They were about to be separated, because no one wanted to take them all. Kneeling down, he whispered:
— I’ll take them. Every single one.
People thought he was insane. Relatives tried to dissuade him, neighbors gossiped, and social workers doubted him. But Richard sold his belongings, took multiple jobs, and built nine small beds with his own hands. His nights were filled with bottles of milk, bedtime stories, and braiding hair under the dim kitchen light.
A Home with Room for Everyone
In the 1980s, Richard’s house was like a buzzing hive. The girls ran through the rooms, laughed, argued, and sometimes cried. Yet each one knew: this was a place of love, a place where no one would be abandoned.
Richard rose before dawn. He helped the older ones get ready for school, fed the younger ones, and then rushed to work. Half of his wages went to the nanny, but he never complained. For him, each child was not a burden, but a universe of her own.
Nine Personalities — Nine Paths
Sarah laughed even in hard times and later became a literature teacher.
Naomi was rebellious, but found her calling in law, defending the voiceless.
Leah was the heart of the family and fulfilled her dream of working in medicine.Family games
Esther lived through music and opened a studio for children.
Ruth realized her dream of owning a bakery, where the smell of bread became the family’s symbol.
Miriam chose science and became an ecologist.
Deborah devoted her life to faith and spiritual service, preaching love and acceptance.
Hannah turned her gift for craft into a workshop where she creates furniture and art.
Rachel, the youngest, became a journalist and the storyteller of the family’s journey.Family games
Growing Up Through Challenges
In the 1990s, the family faced illnesses, poverty, and the mistrust of outsiders. Yet every evening they gathered at one table, where Richard told stories about Anne. Though the girls had never met her, they felt her presence in every corner of the house.
As time passed, each daughter found her path. Some studied, some built careers, others started families. But all of them carried the same root — the love that bound them together.
2025: A Promise Fulfilled
Today Richard is gray-haired and weary, but he sits at the head of a large table. Around him are his grown daughters with their own families. On the table is Ruth’s bread, in the corner Esther’s piano, on the shelf Rachel’s articles, beside it Miriam’s diplomas. Children play with toys made by Hannah, while a candle lit by Deborah softly glows.
Richard looks at it all and realizes: he has fulfilled Anne’s request. Love did not fade — it lives here, in these people, in their voices, in their laughter.
And when the evening comes to an end, a little granddaughter climbs onto his lap and whispers:
— Grandpa, tell me a story.
And he begins — the very same one. The story of nine little girls who once found their home

At 2 a.m., my phone vibrated. A message from my son lit up the screen: “Mom… my mother-in-law doesn’t want you at the baby’s birthday. I know you bought this house for ten million, but… I’m sorry.” I stared at the message for a long time. Eventually, I replied with a single line: “I understand.” But deep down, I had already made up my mind. That night, I went to my desk, opened the briefcase I hadn’t touched in years, and signed the documents no one ever knew I owned. By the time they woke up in the morning… the ten-million-dollar house was no longer theirs. And what followed destroyed the entire family.
