I checked each room. No dog. After that I heard it — the faint sound of movement, a whisper of fabric. It came from the hallway. A locked door. “Hello?” I called softly. “Mom said you wouldn’t come,” a small voice replied. My heart stopped. “Who’s there?” “It’s me. Ben.” Clara’s five-year-old son. My hands fumbled for the latch — locked from the outside. When I opened the door, the smell of stale air and urine hit me. Ben sat on the floor, pale and thin, clutching a stuffed dinosaur. His little face was hollow, eyes glazed with exhaustion. “Ben, sweetheart… how long have you been here?” He looked up weakly. “Since Friday. Mom said I was bad.” I scooped him into my arms, my hands shaking. His skin was hot — feverish. He barely had the strength to hold on. I rushed him straight to the nearest hospital. On the way, his voice cracked through the silence. “Mom said… if you came… don’t tell anyone.” At the Medical Center, doctors hurried him into emergency care. Severe dehydration. Malnutrition. He weighed less than a toddler. When they asked what happened, I told them everything — except one thing. I hadn’t mentioned Clara yet. Because right then, my phone buzzed. A text from her. “Thanks for feeding Buddy. And Grace… don’t go snooping. Some things are better left alone.” I froze, staring at the screen — my bl00d running cold.
