Holding a photograph my mother had buried because truth had a face and it looked too much like mine.

Outside, evening gathered over the lake in slow blue folds. Natalie lit the kitchen light. I set the photograph upright on the mantel. Somewhere in the trees, wind moved through branches with the hush of pages being turned.

For most of my life, I thought survival meant enduring what was done to you without letting it change your expression.

I know better now.

Survival is exposure.
It is naming the hand.
It is opening the locked room.
It is refusing to carry a lie just because it raised you.

My mother once told a room full of people that I embarrassed her.

She was right about one thing, at least.

By the end, I did.

Only not for the reasons she thought.
