The word cuts across him so sharply he stops.
This is new for him. Not being louder, but being interrupted by a daughter who no longer needs his approval to survive. You see the recalculation happen. “I never liked how you did things,” he says finally. “The business. Denver. The child. The way you never asked permission.”
That one almost makes you smile.
Because there it is. The truest sentence in the room. Not Christmas. Not presents. Not lists. Control. He never forgave you for becoming a woman whose life no longer required his endorsement. Lily was just the easiest place to press when he wanted you reminded.
“Well,” you say quietly, “now you know how much permission matters to me.”
He stares at you for a long time.

He opens his mouth, closes it, and leaves.

You look at Lily laughing in the living room with her cousins, bear under one arm, face bright in the tree light.

You understand that differently now.

Not the radiant heat and custom cabinetry and million-dollar dream your father lost because he couldn’t bear to act like a grandfather for thirty seconds.

You believed him.
