Emma didn’t apologize. She didn’t flinch.
“It’s tap water,” she said evenly. “Filtered. You can have bottled, tap, or nothing. Those are your choices.”
James looked up, stunned.
Lily stared.
For the first time, an adult hadn’t panicked.
“Grilled cheese,” Lily said sharply. “Whole wheat. Aged cheddar. Crusts off. Squares. No brown spots.”
“Got it,” Emma said.
Ten minutes later, Emma returned with a perfect sandwich.
Lily inspected it.
Then, without warning, she swept her arm across the table.
The plate shattered.
James buried his face in his hands.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
The manager rushed forward.
Emma held up one hand.
She knelt.
Not to clean.
She picked up a piece of sandwich and examined it.
“You’re right,” Emma said. “This edge is darker.”
Lily froze.
“But that throw?” Emma continued thoughtfully. “Seven out of ten. Good distance, poor control. If you’re going to make a scene, it should be better.”
Silence.

Lily smiled.
4. The Call
That night, Emma was called into the manager’s office.
James Harrington wanted her number.
An hour later, she sat in the back of a black car that cost more than her annual income.
She stood in a penthouse that felt like a museum, cold and echoing.
James Harrington faced her.
“I want to hire you.”
“I’m a waitress,” Emma said.
“I’ll pay you three hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year.”
Emma stopped breathing.
“You saw my daughter,” James said. “Everyone else sees a monster.”
“I see a kid who’s very good at making people leave,” Emma replied.
He nodded.
“You’re the first person she didn’t hate.”

Emma agreed.

“I’m not a nanny,” she said. “I’m not staff.”
“Agreed.”

Victoria Harrington, elegant and cold, scoffed.
“And you,” Emma said to James, “have to show up. Money doesn’t buy you out of parenting.”
James smiled.

Emma arrived every day anyway.
Lily tested her relentlessly.
