“I was sexually assaulted while paragliding at an altitude of more than 30m … I felt violated and dirty,” the terrified woman shared.

Recently, Michelle Wilson, a 52-year-old British tourist, said she was sexually assaulted by her paragliding operator during a vacation in Tunisia. The incident happened while she was hovering in the air at an altitude of more than 30m.

Michelle said that the Tunisian man – who was strapped behind her during the tandem flight – made lewd gestures and kept whispering something in Arabic throughout the time.

“I felt violated, dirty and extremely scared,” Michelle shared.

She and a friend had planned to go tandem paragliding, but were told by staff that the winds were too strong and they had to fly separately, each with an instructor.

Her friend had gone ahead and had a great experience, with no problems at all. Michelle said she saw the obvious gap between her friend’s body and the paraglider. However, the mother-of-three from Southport, Merseyside, had a completely different experience.

“I felt my bikini bottoms being pulled up, and then he tightened his seatbelt as if to press me closer. His legs were around me, one hand was holding onto the parachute, the other was not. I felt his hand on my leg,” Michelle said.

“He was touching me, rubbing against me, saying something in Arabic. I tried to arch my back, to get away. I felt really violated. He was a young boy, probably in his 20s – and I was completely helpless, hanging in the air.”

Michelle burst into tears as soon as she landed. She immediately reported the incident to the manager of the water sports centre at the resort, then to the local police station.

The trip to Sousse was a £6,000 (about 208 million VND) holiday that Michelle organised herself. She was with her 17-year-old daughter, 16-year-old twin boys and her daughter’s friend. But after the incident, she said she was unable to enjoy anything for the rest of the holiday.

“As a woman, you’re used to men in these countries being teased. But this wasn’t teasing – it was a real sexual assault,” Michelle said.

She now believes the suspect has been arrested. Michelle has also received support from her insurer and the UK Foreign Office.

EasyJet responded: “The safety and well-being of our customers is always our top priority. We continue to support Ms Wilson and are working closely with our hotel partners to investigate the incident.”
