A woman near the back began to cry. I think it was someone who had known my mother. One of the board members lowered his head into his hand. The reporter was already sending texts. My father looked around the room as if he still expected authority to gather around him and rebuild the walls.

Lorraine stepped up beside me and said in a voice bright enough to cut glass, “I have notarized copies for anyone with a legal interest.”

He never asked me to be less complicated than I was. That frightened me once. Now it felt like the safest place I knew.

“I’m learning,” I admitted.

He lifted his hands and, with my permission contained in the stillness between us, touched my face. Forehead. Temple. The scar along my cheek. The line at my neck. The place near my shoulder where the copper pipe had changed the direction of my life.

A year earlier I would have gone rigid from the exposure of it.

Now I leaned into his touch.

“You were right that night,” I said quietly.

“About what?”

“That I was more beautiful than you imagined.”

His mouth curved. “I know.”

I snorted. “That was outrageously arrogant.”

“I’m a music teacher. Arrogance is part of the pension package.”

Then his expression softened.

“I was wrong about one thing, though,” he said.

“What?”

“I thought the bravest thing about you was surviving the fire.” His thumb moved lightly against the scar at my jaw. “It wasn’t. It was coming back into the room after.”

For a second I couldn’t speak.

Then the emcee announced us. The audience applauded. Somewhere out front, children were shushing one another badly. Lorraine was probably threatening a sound technician. Life, in other words, was continuing in its gloriously uncinematic way.

I took Caleb’s hand.

Together we walked onto the stage.

The lights came up. The audience saw me. Really saw me.

And this time I did not disappear.
