People across the country are calling for a boycott of Disney and Hulu streaming services after ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel’s show from the air indefinitely on Sept. 17.
Disney is the parent company of ABC. After the decision to suspend “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” was announced, social media users began posting pictures of their cancellation receipts under the hashtags #CancelDisney and #CancelDisneyPlus.
What people are saying on social media as they cancel Disney Plus
“Cancel your Disney and ABC subscription for what they did to Jimmy Kimmel. Let them know how pissed off you are!!!!” wrote one user on X on Sept. 17.
“Cancelled my Disney Plus and Hulu bundle. This isn’t a slippery slope, it’s a cliff, and Disney just went off it,” wrote another user onReddit. “We won’t be going to Disney movies. Not anymore. No more parks. No more Star Wars toys and shirts. Nothing.”
A Facebook user said they discontinued their Disney Plus account after being a member since 2019 in protest to Kimmel’s suspension.
IndyStar reached out to the Walt Disney Company for comment about its subscription services on Sept. 19 but received no response before publication of this article.
Not only regular fans, celebrities weigh in on Jimmy Kimmel controversy, canceling Disney Plus
The anger isn’t from regular fans alone. Celebrities have weighed in on the controversy, which include notable Disney actors and public figures such as David Letterman and former Vice President Mike Pence.
Actor Tatiana Maslany, star of the Disney+ series, “She-Hulk:Attorneyat Law,” called for her more than half-a-million fans on Instagram to “Cancel your (Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN) subscriptions,” in a reel she posted to her Instagramaccount, according to multiple media outlets.
Former “Supernatural” actor Misha Collins posted on X to his 2.6 million followers he would cancel his DisneyPlus subscription “indefinitely.”
“It’s pretty easy to cancel your Disney+ subscription, and a coordinated, national day of cancellarions would send a very clear message about our values as Americans,” actor Wil Wheaton posted to BlueSky on Sept. 18.
Why are people canceling Disney?
Kimmel’s comments about Tyler Robinson, the man charged with killing Charlie Kirk, came during his opening monologue on Sept. 15.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.
Conservatives took issue with Kimmel’s implication that Robinson was MAGA-affiliated. Authorities have not confirmed a motive for the shooting.
In an interview on a conservative podcast, FCC chairman Brendan Carr called Kimmel’s remarks “the sickest conduct possible.”
Nexstar Media pulls episodes of Jimmy Kimmel, ABC follows suit
Nexstar Media, one of ABC’s largest affiliate groups, announced on Sept. 17 that it would not air episodes of Kimmel’s show. Shortly after this decision, ABC pulled it from air.
People calling for the boycott are upset with what they see as ABC and, by extension, parent company Disney silencing criticism of President Donald Trump and his administration at the expense of free speech.
Free speech or just business? Mike Pence weighs in on Kimmel suspension
Former Vice President Mike Pence recently weighed in on the controversy, saying the suspension is not an example of censorship because it was a decision made by ABC, not the government.
“The First Amendment does not protect entertainers who say crass or thoughtless things, as Jimmy Kimmel did in the wake of a national tragedy,” he told The Atlantic.
Kimmel’s suspension came after a threat by Carr, however, who urged ABC’s parent company, Disney, to “take action” against Kimmel or risk consequences.
Pence told The Atlantic he “would have preferred that the chairman of the FCC had not weighed in.”
David Letterman: ‘You all see where this is going, correct?’
Late-night talk show legend and Indianapolis native David Letterman added his thoughts about the Kimmel controversy during a Sept. 18 appearance at The Atlantic Festival.
“I feel bad about this because we all see where this is going, correct? It’s managed media. It’s no good. It’s silly. It’s ridiculous,” Letterman said. “And you can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian, criminal administration in the Oval Office. That’s just not how this works.”
Why are people canceling Hulu?
Hulu is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC. People are also calling for a boycott of Hulu under the hashtag #CancelHulu.
