Who are Whoopi Goldberg’s ex-husbands?
The View host has been married three times.
Here’s what we know about her exes:
Alvin Martin
Best known as Whoopi’s former drug counsellor, Alvin Martin tied the knot with the actress in 1973.
Whoopi and Alvin share a daughter together
When she was just 18-years-old, The Color Purple actress gave birth to their daughter, Alexandrea Martin on May 9, 1973.
But their union, which was Whoppi’s longest, lasted just six years.
The pair filed for divorce in 1979.
Actress Alexandrea has gone on to make Whoopi and Alvin grandparents with three children, Amarah Skye, Jerzey, and Mason.
Their oldest granddaughter Amarah made the Whoopi a great-grandparent in 2014 when she gave birth to daughter Charli Rose Burr-Reynaud.
David Claessen
Whoopi was married to David Claessen from 1986 to 1988
Seven years after her divorce from Martin, Whoopi tied the knot with David Claessen.
David is a Dutch cinematographer, best known for his work with Britney Spears, Travie McCoy and Jason Mraz.
But, after tying the knot in 1986, the couple decided to split in 1988.
Claessen later went on to marry Katen Green in 1992 and their union lasted 10 years.
He then married his third wife, American writer and photographer Taiye Selasi in 2013.
Lyle Tractenberg
Whoopi Goldberg and Lyle Tractenberg had their divorce finalized a year after marrying
In 1994, Goldberg tied the knot with actor and an ITSE union organizer Lyle Tractenberg.
The pair were only married for a year before they called it quits.
Following a third divorce, The View host realized that marriage wasn’t right for her.
She said: “It took me some time but I realized that trying to turn myself into something I wasn’t ready for, for a man. Wasn’t his fault. It was mine.
“My marriages failed and I was the common denominator.
“My commitment was never that strong. I can say now that I was never really in love.”
As well as her three marriages, the Sister Act actress has had a string of relationships including with Ted Danson from 1992 to 1994 and Frank Langella from 1996 to 2001.
‘Hit-and-run’ hookups
But Whoopi has since added that she will never marry or be in a committed relationship again.
She said: “Some people are not meant to be married and I am not meant to. I’m sure it is wonderful for lots of people.”
Whoopi has become increasingly well-known for her witty and relatable comments about love and dating.
In 2016 she spoke about her relationship vow saying, “I don’t want somebody in my house.”
And last year while on The View, she discussed the struggles of modern dating before joking saying, “don’t listen to me, because I don’t live with another human being.”
“For me, I like a hit-and-run because I am not interested in a committed relationship,” she added later in the show.
The 68-year-old has openly spoken about having hookups or “hit-and-runs” but has insisted that they “can’t spend the night”.
In an episode of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, the Emmy winner admitted: “When you’re married to somebody, you have to be invested in how they’re feeling. I am not.

“I’m invested in my kid. I’m invested in her kids. I’m invested in my son-in-law. I’m invested in my friends.
“But I’m not invested in a relationship that would require as much as having a child requires and I know that that’s not for me.”
